The 4 Phases of Braces Treatment

Treatment

Orthodontic treatment lasts approximately between 12 and 24 months. But what do you do during all that time to achieve a perfect smile, both aesthetically and functionally? In this post, we tell you the 4 phases of braces treatment. So, if you want to know more information, keep reading!

Phase 1: Alignment

During the first weeks, we align and level the teeth little by little. To do this, we use light forces through which we manage to correct crowding and vertical discrepancies. Once this stage is completed, the teeth will be aligned and the dental arches will be level.

This is one of the fastest and most grateful phases since the patient can see that their teeth are placed and well placed visually. However, there are still several phases to achieve the desired result.

Phase 2: Correction of Malocclusion

After the first few weeks of alignment and leveling, it is time to correct the bite. In this way, we fit the teeth into their optimal position. In some cases, it is necessary to place the famous rubber bands or elastics, with which we help ourselves to solve occlusion problems.

Phase 3: Closing Spaces and Refinement

Once the bite is correct, it is time to close spaces. Thus, we ensure that the teeth are perfectly aligned, and level, with correct occlusion and closed spaces.

The last thing we do before removing the brackets is make small refinement adjustments to obtain a perfect final result. When the result is the desired one, we proceed to remove the device.

Phase 4: Retention

Although in some cases it is the great unknown, without a doubt, the retention phase is one of the most important. Thanks to it, we managed to maintain the results obtained with orthodontic treatment over time. Remember that teeth tend to move back to their initial position; therefore, it is advisable to place retainers to prevent this.

There are two types: Fixed, which consists of a small wire that is placed behind the teeth and cannot be seen or felt; and removable, which consists of transparent, custom-made splints that are placed during sleeping hours.

In any case, if you want to know what your orthodontic treatment will be like, remember that at McAllister Orthodontics we have a team of orthodontists who will be in charge of studying your case and providing you with a treatment plan tailored to you so that you can achieve your ideal smile.

In addition to braces, we have the most advanced orthodontic system with a variety of brace styles. These personalized transparent aligners can be removed to eat and brush your teeth normally. Therefore, it is a very comfortable option and no one will notice that you are wearing a device.
